Présentation de l'éditeur

19th-century painters of the Opal CoastFrom the 1880s until the First World War, the Opal Coast became a favoured setting for numerous artists, both French and foreign, who came to practise the art of painting outdoors. Its proximity to Paris where most of them consolidated their training, the beauty of the natural surroundings and the presence of a seafaring population with strongly held traditions were all factors that contributed to the area's attraction. While the passion for the eastern Channel ports, notably Etaples and Boulogne-sur-Mer, often later than the interest for the Normandy and Brittany coasts that saw the spread of artists' colonies, met similar expectations, it gave rise to an extremely rich pictorial production, flying the flag of realism.
