Paris and its painters

We started this book, akin to a walk, by following the painters who drew their inspiration from Paris and by taking photos today of the locations they depicted. First, let us locate the precise spot where the works were painted : where did Renoir set up his easel on the embankments of the Seine ? From which balcony did Pissarro get this perspective from above of the Avenue de l'Opéra ? Under which angle did Utrillo position himself to paint Saint-Pierre-de-Montmartre ? Sixty paintings of all the neighbourhoods of Paris have actually been reviewed. Sometimes, countless transformations which have radically changed the town crop up between the painter's vision and the present evidence provided by the photo. On the contrary, one can often recognise the locations and miraculously, we all see the canal Saint-Martin with Sisley's eyes and the Moulin de la Galette with van Gogh's. For each of these 60 paintings, an accurate text, without any hollow erudition, provides all sorts of explanations on the work and its author. It is the opportunity to get acquainted with less known but very endearing artists fromt the XVth to the XXth century : Raguenet under Louis XV, Canella during the Restoration, Grandjean at the Belle Époque... And many other French or foreign painters who have loved Paris passionately, the colour of its streets and the light of its sky. Has Paris not always captivated painters ?
