Fabien Delorme learns that his wife has been killed in a road accident in the company of her lover. Fabien, whose life had been problem-free until then, finds himself a widow and a cuckold on the same day. He devises a plan to seduce the dead lover’s wife, little knowing that he’s setting up a spiral of events, which he miraculously survives.
Just back from spending a weekend with his father, Fabien Delorme, an ordinary guy up till that point – learns that his wife has been killed in a car crash. The lonely widower also discovers his wife was cheating on him: his beloved Sylvie had been sitting in the front seat of a car driven by her lover, during a romantic escapade to Bourgogne. Stunned, Fabien takes refuge with his friend, Gilles. The two men slowly sink back in time, playing with Lego and falling asleep surrounded by soft toys… until one day Fabien makes a plan to take vengeance on his wife’s lover… albeit posthumously. He starts searching for his widow, determined to seduce the wife of the man who seduced his. He meets Martine and the affair begins. One day, the couple set off to spend the weekend with Madeleine, who is both Martine’s best friend and her dead husband’s first partner. Martine and Madeleine’s friendship goes back a long way – just like their rivalry! When Madeleine reveals Fabien’s true identity to her friend, Martine – typically a vulnerable and easily-influenced woman - decides to take her revenge. She sees Madeleine off with a bullet in the head and chooses to start a new life with Fabien, who rapidly goes from being her contented lover to her prisoner. She alone goes out into the outside world; he can only glimpse it from his window. When Gilles turns up to set his friend free, Martine bumps him off too! In an ironic example of the biter getting bit, Fabien is bound hand and foot in a scenario that he accepts, imagining that somehow, given the circumstances, he and Martine will grow old together… Until the day he summons up enough strength to make his escape. In The Front-seat Passenger, Pascal Garnier, a brilliant ethnologist of the Gallic fall from grace, once again brings us a moving portrait of those everyday heroes he’s so fond of, those minuscule lives he amplifies with unparalleled tenderness and humour. Film references: Joel and Ethan Coen; Albert Dupontel; Pedro Almodovar’s black comedies. Especially appealing features: An amusing, offbeat novel in the same vein as the Coen brothers’ comedies, with two great roles for outstanding actresses.
